Walker & Morrell Funeral Directors has opened a new, dedicated funeral home in the heart of the Leam Lane estate, reinforcing its long‑standing commitment to supporting families across Gateshead and Washington.
Having served local communities for more than two decades, Walker & Morrell is proud to be the only funeral directors operating directly from the Leam Lane estate. The new funeral home, located in Fewster Square, has been carefully converted into a welcoming and calm space where families can speak privately about funeral arrangements and spend time with their loved ones.
Supporting families, close to home
Area Development Manager Martin Morrell, who has worked in the business for over 15 years, explained that the decision to open a Leam Lane branch followed years of supporting families in the area.
“As far back as I can remember we have provided funerals for the people of Leam Lane,” Martin said. “But having a physical base close to where they live is only going to help them more in what is, of course, a difficult time.”
Walker & Morrell already operates funeral homes in central Gateshead and Washington, making Leam Lane a natural next step in ensuring families can access local, personal support when they need it most.
A space shaped with care
The Fewster Square building has been fully refurbished by the team to create a funeral home they are proud of – one that reflects the values Walker & Morrell has been known for since it was established in 2002 by John Morrell and Lynne Walker.
“The team has done a fantastic job on the building, completely refurbishing it and making it into a funeral home we are proud of,” Martin added.
Strengthening the local team
The opening of the Leam Lane branch coincides with the arrival of experienced Funeral Director Samantha Rutherford, who has joined the Walker & Morrell team and will be based at the new funeral home.
“I’m looking forward to working in the Leam Lane area and getting to know the local people,” Samantha said. “It’s an honour to guide families through one of life
